VA claim evidence checklist: what to gather before you file

Most VA disability claims need three things: a current diagnosis, proof of an event, injury, or exposure in service, and a link between them. Gather your DD214, service treatment records, VA and private medical records, and personal or buddy statements. VA can also request federal records for you.

The checklist

The three things most claims need

Secondary claims link a new condition to one that is already service connected. Some conditions are presumed to be linked for certain service, so the rules can differ.

Tips

Track this checklist in one place

Veterans Benefits AI keeps this checklist for each condition, marks what you have and what is missing, and quotes your records with page numbers. 14-day free trial, then $9.99/month or $107.99/year. Cancel anytime. Never a cut of your VA pay.

Common questions

Do I have to send evidence with my claim?

No. VA says you do not have to, and it can request some records for you. Sending what you have can speed things up.

What is a buddy statement?

A written statement from someone who knows what happened or how your condition affects you. VA Form 21-10210 is the form.

What if a record is missing?

Mark it as missing and ask for it. VA can request federal records, and Form 21-4142 lets VA request private records.
