How to prepare a VA disability claim with AI

Use AI for the reading and sorting: finding what your records say, seeing which evidence is missing, and checking your own statement. Then file the claim yourself on VA.gov, or through a free accredited representative. AI cannot file for you and cannot promise a result.

Seven steps

  1. File an intent to file (VA Form 21-0966) if you have not. It can hold your start date for one year while you get ready.
  2. Get copies of your records: service treatment records, VA and private medical records, and any past decision letters. You can request your C-file too.
  3. Upload them to an AI tool that shows where each answer came from. Check every quote against the page.
  4. For each condition, read the published rating rules (38 CFR Part 4). Note which records talk about the same things.
  5. Make a list of what is still missing: a current diagnosis, proof of the event in service, or a link between them.
  6. Write your personal statement (VA Form 21-4138) in your own words. Ask people who know you for buddy statements (VA Form 21-10210).
  7. File on VA.gov with VA Form 21-526EZ, or hand your organized file to a VSO.

What AI does well

What AI cannot do

Doing this in Veterans Benefits AI

Ask My Records quotes your own pages with page numbers. The rating rules cover 721 conditions. Statement review checks your draft against those rules. A checklist and deadline view keep you on track, and you can share a summary with a VSO. 14-day free trial, then $9.99/month or $107.99/year. Cancel anytime. Never a cut of your VA pay.

Common questions

Is it OK to use AI on a VA claim?

Yes, to prepare. The claim, the statements, and the facts must be yours and true. You sign and file it, or your accredited representative does.

Should I upload my records to a free chat bot?

Be careful. VA warns against putting personal or health data into unapproved web tools. Use a tool that says how it stores your files and whether an outside AI company sees them.

Do I still need a VSO?

You do not have to use one, but a VSO is free and can represent you. Being organized first makes that meeting count.
