Who can download VA medical records
VA.gov says you can find, review, print, and download your VA medical records in the new My HealtheVet experience on VA.gov. The page was updated June 12, 2026.
VA says a veteran can do this only if both of these are true: you are enrolled in VA health care, and you are registered as a patient at a VA health facility.
The same page says you can download lab and test results, vaccine and allergy records, and care summaries and notes. If you print or download a file, VA says you have to protect it.

My HealtheVet and the VA Blue Button report
A VA help page updated June 25, 2026 tells you how to open the download. Sign in to the Medical records section of My HealtheVet on VA.gov. Find the part called Download your medical records reports. Select Go to download your medical records reports.
That June 2026 page does not use the words Blue Button. An older My HealtheVet page still says you can customize a VA Blue Button report and save it as a PDF or a text file.
A May 20, 2025 VA page said that after June 4, 2025, the VA Blue Button report no longer includes My Goals, Wellness Reminders, or VA electrocardiogram (EKG) information.
If you do not see a Blue Button label, use Download your medical records reports. Do not guess a menu name.
You can no longer type your own health facts into My HealtheVet. To save facts you typed on the old site, use the same download page, then select Download self-entered health information report (PDF).

A full copy: VA Form 10-5345a
VA.gov says you can get a complete copy from your VA health facility. The medical records office is also called the Release of Information office. The page was updated July 9, 2026.
The form is VA Form 10-5345a, Individuals' Request for a Copy of Their Own Health Information. The form page lists a revision date of July 2021.
You can send a secure message that names the records you want. Pick a care team from the facility where you got care, and the team name must include Release of Information. VA says it will reply to that message within 3 business days and tell you the next step. If you do not see that team, use mail, fax, or an in-person visit.
For mail, fax, or in person, fill out VA Form 10-5345a and give it to that office. If you go in person, bring a photo ID, such as a Veteran Health Identification Card or a driver's license.
VA says a copy can take up to 30 calendar days if the records are stored online, and up to 60 calendar days if they are on paper. Paper is more common for records from before 1998. If it will take longer, VA says it will mail you a letter. If you do not get that letter within 20 calendar days, you can call the office. Calling before then can slow the request.
VA Form 10-5345 is a different form. It lets VA send your health records to someone else. For your own copy, use 10-5345a.
VA's Privacy Act page also says you can email a photo or scan of the signed 10-5345a to the privacy officer at the VA facility where you get care, if you cannot use secure messaging. Use the contact page for that facility. We do not send the form.

When the file is in your hands, you can store it in My Records. Storing it does not send it to VA and does not file a claim.
Questions
Is the VA Blue Button report my whole VA record?
VA's download pages describe the parts you can save online, such as labs, notes, vaccines, and allergies. For a complete copy, VA tells you to ask the Release of Information office with VA Form 10-5345a. We do not know what is in your file.
Do you send VA Form 10-5345a for me?
No. You send it to your VA clinic, or you use secure messaging on VA.gov. We do not sign in and we do not file.
What this page is not
- Education only. Not legal advice. Not medical advice. Not a VA decision.
- We do not request records. We do not sign in to VA.gov, milConnect, or the National Archives for you. We do not file.
- We are not an accredited representative, and this page does not appoint one.
- A link is not a promise that a record exists, that an office still uses the same menu, or that VA will grant a claim.
- As of October 14, 2026. If a page does not match what you see, check with your branch or VSO.
